Source of all knowledge?
When it comes to information the database is king, few computer concepts
are as fundamental and wide-ranging as the database.
They
can be as simple as an Access database listing the complete contents of your
DVD collection, or a DB2 goliath containing all of the credit history for
everyone in the UK.
Conceptually they are very similar entities, only the scale and physical
implementation differ.
One thing that seems to happen to all databases is that they have a
tendency to grow. Both in terms of size and usage, something that adds value
will be used by people. Microsoft Access databases with internal Access
forms are very frequently subject to this phenomenon, as they are easy to
extend and can be easily networked.
Unfortunately, Access databases start to encounter performance problems
when more users interrogate the data. But hope is not lost, Microsoft have a
database system of stunning performance, SQL Server. A true enterprise level
database system, powerful and very scalable.
Microsoft call the migration of data from Access to SQL Server "Upsizing".
Selvatico are experienced in the migration of data from Access to SQL
Server, with minimum service interruption and limited interface changes.
One of our clients, using a networked Access database, had a frequently
used part search query that was taking approximately thirty seconds. Post
SQL Server upsizing the same query was taking less than one second. That one
change alone cost justified the conversion.
But they also gained increased reliability and cross the board
performance increases.
