Skype Alternative Telecomms

Skype is a piece of software that allows users to make free voice calls over the Internet. Calls to other Skype users are free, while calls to both landlines and mobile phones can be made for a very competive fee using Skype also has other popular additional features which include instant messaging, file transfer, and video conferencing.
Skype is an excellent tool for people who travel or who make lots of international calls. There are a few interesting options with Skype, one is Skype-In, where you are given a normal landline number, then calls to this number are routed to Skype on your computer. It doesn't matter where you login in the world, if you are online the phone will ring.
Another is Skype-Out, where you place credit onto your account and you can make phone calls. The cost of these phone calls are dramatically cheaper than normal providers. For instance a Skype call from the UK to China costs just £0.02 per minute, a fraction of BT's charges. Recently, whilst in the USA, I needed to call a nearby company, I used Skype and the call was free, rather than the £1.35 per minute that Vodafone would have charged.

Philips VOIP080

Having a conversation using a computer can be frustrating, getting the levels right, background noise and quality are all issues. Never fear, there are a number of options to improve matters. With a laptop you should be able to connect a standard Bluetooth headset, or you could opt for one of the many Skype compatible handsets.
We choose the Philip VOIP080 USB handset, a very simple device that just plugs directly into your computer. It's compact, easy to use, portable and has great call quality . It's a few years old now, so not as common in the stores, but it is available still.
When you're looking for a Skype phone make sure it carries the Skype logo, there are lots of cheaper options that are terrible to use. It took three different handsets before we found the Philips, so poor performance could be just the handset you are using.
